Thomas Hylland Eriksen is a professor of social anthropology at the University of Oslo. For many years he has worked on identity politics, ethnicity, nationalism, and globalisation. Eriksen has focused on neoliberalism, individualism, social deprivation, and alienation as the more likely causal explanations for why young Europeans have committed brutal terrorist attacks in the past year, rather than Islam.
